Trail of Li Stria

Sondalo Palazzetto - Fontanaccia

This itinerary retraces the steps of the herdsmen who led their herds up from the valley floor to the mountain pastures.

Paths wrapped in alpine atmospheres that even today, still preserve a mysterious charm linked to the ancient legends of witchcraft and the occult that occurred in these places.

It is said that at the sound of the Ave Maria, a stream of burning embers were seen rising from the locality Scala towards the hamlets of Mondadizza, Le Prese, Frontale, and Fumero: these were the witches who abandoned the Sabbath, and retreated at the first light of dawn.

Details

The Li Strìa trail, while presenting no technical difficulties, is still rather challenging due to its steep uphill sections. From Sondalo the route begins along a flat cycle path, before turning right onto an unpaved road (S496) near the quarry. Once you reach the Valle di Scala just past the village of Mondadizza, continue along the S487 road. The climb becomes increasingly arduous until you reach the Scala Piana pasture, where your efforts will be rewarded by magnificent views. From here continue downhill through the forest until you reach a small walkway belonging to a hydraulic dam. Proceed uphill (without crossing the stream) until you reach the Fontanaccia car park at the mouth of Val di Rezzalo. This stage offers no refreshment points along the route, remember to take suitable clothing, water and a snack.

The route is very demanding to travel by mountain bike, so we recommend using the variant dedicated to mountain bikes that you can find in the dedicated section.

Transfer route between stages 5 and 7, which follows the trekking route to Valle di Scala. From here we recommend descending towards the towns of Graile and Mondadizza, taking the Valtellina path to Le Prese and then continuing on the municipal road to Fontanaccia, at the entrance to the Rezzalo valley, passing through the characteristic villages of Frontale and Fumero.

The most daring, trained and with high technical skills can follow the classic route coinciding with the trekking one, going up the Valle di Scala to Scala Piana and following the S487 path to Fontanaccia. Only for bikers willing to push the mountain bike for some stretches and with good technical skills.

Charging points: Palazzetto dello Sport in Sondalo.
